Vernon is a smaller city, so getting around works a little differently than in Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver. This page covers the bus, the ride options, the nearest airport, parking and the big question of whether you need a car. It is an independent guide from a local real estate agent, not affiliated with BC Transit, the City of Vernon or any airline or transport company named below. Check each operator for current fares and schedules before you travel.
Before you decide where to live, run your own test. Look at your likely daily trips, such as work, groceries and school, and see how each one would work by bus, on foot or by car from the neighbourhoods on your list. It tells you more than any general rule.
Do you need a car?
Do I need a car in Vernon?
For most households in Vernon, yes: a car makes daily life much easier, though some people manage without one if they live and work close to a bus route.
BC Transit's Vernon system serves most of Vernon and Coldstream, plus Enderby, Armstrong, Spallumcheen, Lumby and Electoral Areas B, D and F, and Route 90 links to Kelowna and its airport. Local buses run fixed routes on set schedules, so a home far from a stop means a longer walk or wait. handyDART serves eligible people who can't use regular buses.
In my experience, hills, winter roads and spread-out shopping also favour a car. Before you commit, check the bus map for the address you're considering.
How do the local buses work?
Vernon Regional Transit is a BC Transit system, run in partnership with local governments.
